Background of the study
School libraries play a crucial role in shaping students’ academic abilities, particularly in enhancing information retrieval skills. In Ado, Ekiti State, these libraries provide access to diverse resources and employ instructional strategies that improve students’ abilities to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively. Through structured user education programs and practical workshops, school libraries help students develop critical thinking and research skills that are vital in today’s digital era (Oladele, 2023). The integration of digital tools alongside traditional library resources allows students to become proficient in navigating electronic databases and online catalogs. Despite these advances, challenges such as limited resource availability, inadequate training, and outdated technology persist, potentially hindering the full development of information retrieval skills. This study examines the influence of school libraries on students’ information retrieval capabilities in Ado, with a focus on identifying gaps in current practices and suggesting improvements to enhance academic performance and digital literacy (Akinyele, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although school libraries are designed to enhance information retrieval skills, many students in Ado face difficulties in effectively accessing and using information. Limited technological resources, infrequent user training, and a lack of up-to-date materials have contributed to suboptimal information literacy levels. This study aims to identify these challenges and evaluate how current library services impact students’ research capabilities, with the goal of recommending strategies to improve the effectiveness of school library programs (Eze, 2023).
Objectives of the study
To assess the impact of school library services on students’ information retrieval skills.
To identify challenges that impede effective information access.
To propose strategies for improving library training and resource availability.
Research questions
How do school libraries influence students’ ability to retrieve information?
What challenges limit effective information retrieval in school libraries?
What improvements can be made to enhance information literacy among students?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the role of school libraries in developing essential information retrieval skills. The findings will inform educators and library professionals on how to optimize training programs and resource allocation, ultimately enhancing academic performance and digital literacy in Ado (Olatunji, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to the topic only.
